EducationKent State University at Kent - BA, International Studies
ExperienceI attended Kent State University. When I work with students in English as a Second Language and specifically, in courses related to work, I focus on communication and competence. This requires that I speak and relate with a student in a practical, true-to-life way, emphasizing communication about ideas and concepts instead of focusing only on correct usage or memorization of mechanics and grammar. In this way, engagement and conversing in significant ways is more important than just being right. Students learn languages better when dealing with subject matter that's important to them, that's useful, and that piques their interest. I've woven United States Government into my ESL lessons because my students have expressed interest in the subject. In addition to ESL, I'm experienced in tutoring U.S. History, Algebra, Arabic, Elementary Math (Grades 1-8), High School Math, U.S. Constitutional History, and Social Studies. I can also work on test preparation (especially the ISEE). In my free time, I enjoy reading about the history of the United States, walking, Revolutionary and Civil War history, and watching Turner Classic Movies.
